Terminal in focus - Milton CityCat terminal

Brisbane's newest ferry terminal

Brisbane City Council opened the stunning new $8.7 million dual-berthing, CityCat terminal near Park Road, Milton, on 18 January 2015, another milestone in its ongoing terminal upgrade project.

More than $100 million is being invested in eleven new or upgraded ferry terminals across the city, including seven flood recovery projects at UQ St Lucia, Regatta, North Quay, QUT Gardens Point, Maritime Museum, Holman Street and Sydney Street, funded by the Federal and State Governments through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement.

The new Milton facility takes flood resilience in terminal infrastructure to a new level, explained Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

“This terminal is equipped with a robust, flood resilient pontoon and its gangway will detach during a significant flood, allowing it to swing behind the pontoon to avoid being struck by debris.”

“The 11 metre high pier, which weighs 31 tonnes and is anchored to the riverbed with steel piles, will deflect heavy objects in flood waters as well as anchor the pontoon.”

In addition to improved flood resilience, the terminal has been designed with improved accessibility in mind, featuring a walkway, stairs and accessible ramps enabling commuters to travel from Coronation Drive, over the busy Bicentennial Bikeway to the terminal, eliminating the need to cross the bikeway.

“It has also been equipped with audio-tactile devices for people with a visual impairment, continuous handrails along the gangway and pontoon, and seating and rest zones in the waiting area on the pontoon,” Cr Quirk said.

Milton terminal is expected to provide greater public transport access to the city, Park Road dining precinct, the new recreation and tennis facility at Frew Park and Brisbane icons such as Suncorp Stadium and the XXXX Brewery.
